Song Of The Day: “Truth And Fiction”
This was originally going to be the title track. And I hung onto that for awhile, telling people that it was the name of the album, but after getting a fairly muted and “blah” response from my bandmates, we started looking for alternate ideas. And rightly so, I suppose.
I’ve thought that this song was the centerpiece of the record for awhile, though as time goes on, it’s kinda hard to tell. It’s certainly the most indulgent track, arrangement-wise. It’s very easy to hear the connection to Olospo in this music. The extended prog-rock section certainly would’ve fit right in with my old band’s bombastic instrumental leanings. Kudos to Sluthye for that ripping organ solo. The song is actually a composite of two different pieces that I had, one of which was the “What’s This Rumor/Say It Isn’t So” bit , and the middle part, which was an old unfinished idea from the Spo days, called “Grab-ass”. Great title, no?
After debating what to do with both of them for awhile, I finally stumbled onto the idea of putting them together as one long, over-the-top rock monstrosity. And the result? My friend Solly described it as “Paul Westerberg playing with Yes”.
Wow.
