Song Of The Day: “The Deep End”

Hey, look! It’s the title track.  I only recently had the idea to name the album after this track.  I had several ideas originally, all of which were song titles. Which is weird, cause I don’t really think albums need title tracks.  I just couldn’t think of anything else that jumped out at me.  And Tom’s ideas were all horrifically offensive.  It started out as Truth And Fiction.  But then we thought The Fine Art Of Bleeding had a nicer ring to it.  And it does.  But then I went to Allmusic and noticed that there were a whole lot of albums called “Fine Art Of This” or “Fine Art Of That”.  Which irked me a bit.  Then, out of nowhere, while listening to this song, I looked at the album cover photo (a picture I took with my phone in Lake Tahoe earlier this year), and I suddenly thought “that’s it! Let’s call it The Deep End…” Perfect, right?  How ironic, that I would arrive at that title for fear of having an album title that had already been done.  Because, while there has never been a Fine Art Of Bleeding before, there have been probably a hundred albums called The Deep End. Shitballs!

In the end, it doesn’t matter. I remember the funny story about Medicine Head having an album called Dark Side Of The Moon in 1972.  I guess what I’m trying to say is that our album will unquestionably sell as well and be as artistically important as that other album called Dark Side, so I shouldn’t worry about our album title being pre-stolen by Gov’t Mule or Weird Al.

Don did a great job with the album art. He twisted the picture around and it created a dizzying image.  Kinda like if you were laying on your right side, passed out in the snow.  A friend of mine said we should have called it Slackchronicity. That’s gold, Jerry!

As for the song itself…we gave it what I like to call the “Weezer Blue Album” treatment.  With a nod to the Sex Pistols.

See?  We don’t steal.  We just nod.
