Song Of The Day: “What’s To Come”

Happy Thanksgiving! I like to think of Thanksgiving as a day to look forward more than backward. For kids, it’s about looking forward a month to the bigger better holiday on the horizon. But when you grow up (if you ever do), you start to focus more on the bigger better picture, and if you’re lucky, you begin to understand what it is you’re truly thankful for. And maybe you discover a bit more each year of what you really want in this life.

This is “What’s To Come”. I wrote it in 2004, and it appeared as the closing track on our first Slack album, Wishful Sinking, in 2007. The original idea was to create a very atmospheric recording, with multiple layers of keyboards and vocals. But as it evolved onstage and subsequently in the studio, it became more of a U2 arena rock thing. Too bad we don’t play stadiums. Whenever I hear this, I think we could’ve recorded it much better. But it gets stronger as it goes. I still enjoy the Pink Floyd ending and the odd-time turnaround, which I still get confused by…thanks to PW for that.  In the end, it’s about having no regrets, and looking eagerly ahead to a hopeful future.  It’s not about Jesus.  Not that there’s anything wrong with him…

So, in conclusion…fuck the diet. Eat your stuffing. Go Cowboys.
